This position requires regular onsite presence and travel throughout the state of Virginia. Additional Requirements: A valid driver's license and clean driving record (to be verified). Position Overview: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Information Technology Division is seeking an experienced IT professional to support and enhance network services statewide. This role involves hands-on field work, network engineering, performance monitoring, and infrastructure optimization to ensure robust data and voice communication systems. The ideal candidate will be skilled in troubleshooting, implementing, and maintaining complex network systems, including cabling and vendor management. The position will also require occasional statewide travel to various VDOT sites, sometimes involving overnight stays. Key Responsibilities: Troubleshoot, monitor, and optimize data/voice network systems. Perform network and voice cabling installations and upgrades. Evaluate and enhance system performance. Design and implement network infrastructure improvements. Collaborate with vendors on solution implementation, support contracts, and issue resolution. Develop technical documentation, policies, and operational guidelines. Analyze network capacity and performance metrics. Manage and validate network-related billing and vendor agreements. Research and recommend emerging technologies and trends. Effectively communicate with internal teams and external partners. Technical Environment: Network Technologies: LAN, WAN, WAP, VoIP, Cradlepoint / NetCloud Protocols & Concepts: TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, subnetting, routing Communication Standards: Fiber optics, T1, DS-3, MPLS, cellular (5G, CDMA, TDMA) Tools: Fluke Versiv (with light meter), netAlly AirCheck G3, netAlly nXG, iperf3, nmap, Wireshark, traceroute Software Proficiency: Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio), Microsoft Teams Required Qualifications: Minimum 5 years of experience in data and telecommunications, including installation, testing, and inspection of communications systems. At least 5 years supporting critical, multi-site networks. 5 years of hands-on experience with wireline and wireless technologies (fiber optics, T1, DS-3, MPLS, cellular, VoIP). At least 1 year of experience in testing both copper and fiber cabling.
