Contract Duration: Initial term through June (Extension possible)

Work Schedule & Location Requirements

CCIE candidates go to top of list for consideration.

This position requires
onsite presence in Boston, MA.

Initially, the candidate is expected to be
onsite to understand the team, routing protocols, and overall network architecture.

Long-term flexibility may allow
23 days onsite / 2 days remote after onboarding.

Must be local to Boston or willing to relocate before Day 1

.

Candidates unwilling to work onsite will
not be considered.

Purpose & Scope

The Lead Network Engineer / Architect is responsible for overseeing the coordination, design, implementation, and ongoing support of enterprise data communication systems. This role ensures the efficient operation, reliability, and scalability of MBTAs network infrastructure.

The position involves hands-on troubleshooting, architectural decision-making, vendor coordination, documentation, and providing technical leadership for both day-to-day operations and long-term network strategy. The role also supports new construction projects, site evaluations, and future network expansions.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Assist in coordinating and implementing enterprise data communication systems.

Act as a senior escalation point for complex network issues.

Troubleshoot network problems by quickly and accurately diagnosing issues and communicating solutions to team members and end users.

Oversee installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network equipment.

Monitor network activity to ensure early identification and resolution of issues.

Recommend, schedule, and perform network improvements, upgrades, and repairs.

Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards for procurement and development.

Evaluate new networking equipment and technologies for future implementation.

Communicate effectively with data communication vendors to resolve circuit or hardware issues.

Produce clear, concise, and timely documentation of network problems and resolutions.

Maintain current knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and hardware alternatives through ongoing training.

Plan and coordinate the movement, placement, installation, and cabling of data communication equipment.

Assist in defining the organizations direction for telecommunications and total network services.

Conduct site visits and walkthroughs to assess network infrastructure and provide recommendations.

Support network planning and implementation for new construction projects and new locations.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage multiple vendors.

Serve as technical lead for projects and provide guidance to network team members.

Help develop career paths and mentor junior engineers.

Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites, respond to emergencies, or support events as needed.

Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Technical Environment

Cisco-based enterprise network environment.

Large-scale LAN, WAN, MPLS, and VPN infrastructure.

Architect-level routing and switching responsibilities.

Required Skills & Experience

Strong hands-on experience configuring and supporting complex enterprise networks.

Ability to configure and troubleshoot multiple routing protocols, including:

OSPF

BGP

EIGRP (legacy)

ISIS

MPLS

L3 VPN

VPN

Extensive experience with Cisco products

, specifically in
VXLAN (Virtual Extensible LAN) environments.

Minimum
6+ years of experience designing and implementing enterprise networks.

Deep understanding of routing protocols and network architecture.

Ability to analyze, plan, implement, maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance large, complex network systems.

Experience managing vendors and working across departments.

Strong problem-solving skills with minimal service interruption.

Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Architect-level mindset with the ability to lead initiatives and influence design decisions.

Valid drivers license required.

Education & Certifications

Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
preferred.

CCIE (Written and Practical)

:

Highly preferred and strongly valued

Not mandatory

, but CCIE candidates will receive priority consideration.

Substitution Policy

High School Diploma or GED + 7 additional years of relevant experience may substitute for a bachelors degree.

Associate degree + 3 additional years of relevant experience may substitute for a bachelors degree.

Masters degree may substitute for 2 years of general experience.

Nationally recognized or professional certifications may substitute for 1 year of experience.

Preferred Skills

Advanced Cisco expertise.

Strong VXLAN, BGP, and EIGRP experience.

Experience operating in architect or lead-level roles.

Strong soft skills: team player, clear communicator, collaborative mindset.

Comfortable working in a laid-back but technically strong environment.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Available to work all shifts and locations as assigned.

Available 24/7 as required during severe weather, emergencies, or service-impacting events.

Ability to work extended hours or different schedules as directed by MBTA leadership.
