Designs and documents network architecture. Performs assessments on existing technologies to determine performance and capacity gaps. Establishes security (firewalls, intrusion detection), connectivity and access parameters. Provides recommendations to optimize network infrastructure. Tests and tunes security devices and systems. Programs routers and switches. Implements communications technologies (data or voice). Manages network services from planning phase through implementation. Solid knowledge of routing protocols, network hardware and software, security technologies and network infrastructure is required. Essential Job Duties Perform maintenance and upgrade of networks, including servers, routers, switches, firewalls, remote access systems, and network management systems. Monitor network connectivity and ensure high quality data transmission. Provide technical support to various departments and users with regards to LAN/MAN/WAN (local/metropolitan/wide area networks) and cloud-based networks (e.g., VPN and BoD). Serve as a liaison to vendors and other third-party providers. Research networking requirements; prepares detailed design and installation plans. Conduct internal studies of network performance and traffic analysis. Research problems and conduct cable and equipment installations Meet end user needs by ensuring the uptime, performance, resource availability, and security of the networks managed within established processes, budgets, and guidelines. Determine and diagram the physical layout which illustrates the physical location of and the connections between devices participating on the network. Determine and diagram the logical layout which documents the communication protocols (e.g., IP, TCP, POP3, etc.) and type of service/application (email, file transfer, web browsing, etc.) for each segment of the network. Automate routine tasks using scripting and writing basic computer programs to address more complex systems software configuration and enhancement. Assume other duties as assigned. Preferred Qualifications (Include qualifications that are desired but optional): Network certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, JNCIS, JNCIE, or similar. CCNA certification. 3+ years of experience on a service provider or enterprise-level network in engineering or design roles. 1+ year(s) of experience with VPN, SSL, and other remote access solutions. 1+ year(s) of experience with TCP/IP, QOS, GRE, IPSec, PPP, HSRP, and SNMP protocols. 1+ year(s) of F5 load balancing appliance experience. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (Includes needed certifications, systems knowledge, job skills, characteristics, competencies, etc.): Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages and to draw and interpret graphs. Ability to utilize complex computer operations (intermediate/advance programming, relational databases, and operating systems) and advanced features of software packages, including networking monitoring tools such as Whats Up Gold, Solarwinds, or Ciscoworks, WAN optimization and/or acceleration hardware, Cisco Enterprise/carrier-class routers and switches, and superior network routing protocol troubleshooting skills in IEGRP, BGP, OSPF, and MPLS. Frequently communicates complex information and interacts with management. Can present, resolve, and address delicate situations. Can motivate and persuade others.
